FIND THE RIGHT ACCOMMODATION FOR YOUR TRIP
Once you’ve decided which area you want to stay in, the next step is choosing the right type of accommodation.
Hotels are only one option. Depending on your destination, budget, travel style, and length of stay, you might also consider hostels, guesthouses, apartments, resorts, or other local accommodation.
The best choice isn’t always the cheapest or most luxurious. It’s the one that gives you the right balance of location, comfort, facilities, flexibility, and price.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR ACCOMMODATION
1. Decide What Type of Accommodation Suits Your Trip
Start by thinking about the kind of experience you want.
A hotel can be convenient if you want reception, housekeeping, and other services. Hostels can be useful for budget travellers and people who want to meet other travellers, while apartments can work well for longer stays or when you want more space and cooking facilities.
Guesthouses and locally run accommodation can also offer good value and a more personal experience.
There’s no single best option — choose what works for your particular trip.
2. Set Your Accommodation Budget
Decide roughly how much of your travel budget you’re comfortable spending on accommodation.
Remember that the nightly price doesn’t always tell you the full cost. Taxes, service charges, cleaning fees, resort fees, breakfast, parking, and other extras can increase the final amount.
Always compare the total price for your entire stay, not just the advertised nightly rate.
3. Compare Different Accommodation Options
Don’t book the first place that looks good.
Compare several properties in the same area and look at their location, price, facilities, reviews, cancellation conditions, and overall value.
Sometimes spending slightly more can give you a much better location or useful facilities that save you money elsewhere.
4. Think About the Length of Your Stay
The length of your trip can affect which accommodation makes the most sense.
For a short city break, a centrally located hotel may be convenient even if it costs a little more.
For longer stays, an apartment or accommodation with a kitchen, washing machine, or other useful facilities may offer better value.
Also check whether properties offer discounts for longer stays.
5. Check What’s Included in the Price
Two properties with similar prices may offer very different value.
Check whether your booking includes things such as breakfast, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, luggage storage, airport transfers, parking, kitchen facilities, or access to a gym or pool.
Only pay extra for facilities you’ll actually use.
6. Look at the Location Carefully
Even after choosing the right neighbourhood, check the exact location of the property.
Look at the distance to public transport, restaurants, shops, attractions, and anywhere else you expect to visit regularly.
A cheaper property far from everything may eventually cost more once you include transport — and it can also take valuable time away from your trip.
7. Read Recent Guest Reviews
Reviews can reveal things that photographs and property descriptions don’t show.
Pay particular attention to recent reviews and look for repeated comments about cleanliness, noise, location, Wi-Fi, staff, beds, bathrooms, and safety.
One negative review shouldn’t necessarily put you off. Repeated complaints about the same problem are much more useful to notice.
8. Understand the Cancellation Conditions
Travel plans can change, so check the cancellation policy before booking.
Some cheaper rates are completely non-refundable, while slightly more expensive options may allow free cancellation until close to your arrival date.
Consider whether the saving is worth losing that flexibility.
9. Check Check-In and Check-Out Times
Make sure the property’s check-in arrangements work with your arrival.
This is particularly important if your flight arrives late at night or very early in the morning.
Check whether reception operates 24 hours, whether late check-in needs to be arranged in advance, and whether luggage storage is available before check-in or after check-out.
10. Choose Value, Not Simply the Cheapest Option
The lowest price isn’t always the best deal.
A slightly more expensive property with a better location, breakfast, useful facilities, good reviews, and flexible cancellation may offer much better overall value.
Think about what you’re actually getting for your money rather than focusing only on the price.
💡 MY TRAVEL TIP
When I compare accommodation, I don’t look at the price first and stop there. I compare the location, recent reviews, facilities, cancellation policy, and final price together.
Sometimes I’ll happily pay a little more to stay somewhere that saves me time and makes getting around the destination much easier.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
Before confirming your accommodation, quickly check:
Is the location convenient for my plans?
What is the total price for the entire stay?
Are taxes and additional fees included?
What facilities are included?
What do recent guests say?
Can I cancel or change the booking?
Do the check-in times work with my arrival?
Is this actually good value for my trip?
Taking a few extra minutes to check these details can prevent problems later.
THE BEST ACCOMMODATION IS THE ONE THAT FITS YOUR TRIP
You don’t need the most expensive hotel or the cheapest room you can find.
What matters is finding accommodation that gives you the right combination of location, comfort, price, facilities, and flexibility.
Once you know what type of accommodation suits your trip, you can look more closely at how to compare individual hotels and choose the right one.
