Choosing the Right Hotel

Choose a hotel that fits your location, budget, comfort, and travel style — not just the one with the best photos.

CHOOSE SMARTER, STAY BETTER

Choosing the right hotel can make a big difference to your travel experience. A great hotel isn’t necessarily the most luxurious or the cheapest — it’s the one that works best for your trip.

Location, transport, reviews, facilities, room quality, and the final price all matter. Taking a little extra time to compare these things before booking can help you avoid problems and enjoy a much more comfortable stay.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE CHOOSING A HOTEL

1. Start With the Location

Before comparing rooms and prices, check exactly where the hotel is located.

Look at how far it is from the places you want to visit, whether public transport is nearby, and how easy it will be to get back to your hotel in the evening.

A cheaper hotel far outside the centre may end up costing you more in transport and valuable travel time.

2. Check the Hotel on a Map

Don’t rely only on descriptions such as “close to the city centre” or “near major attractions.”

Open the location on a map and check actual walking distances and public transport connections.

Also look at what is around the hotel, including restaurants, supermarkets, cafés, stations, and other useful facilities.

3. Read Recent Guest Reviews

Reviews can tell you things that professional hotel photos cannot.

Pay particular attention to recent reviews mentioning cleanliness, noise, staff, Wi-Fi, room condition, beds, bathrooms, and the surrounding area.

Instead of focusing only on the overall rating, look for problems that appear repeatedly across several reviews.

4. Look at Traveller Photos

Hotel photography is designed to make rooms look their best.

Photos uploaded by previous guests can give you a more realistic idea of the room size, bathroom, view, condition of the property, and surrounding area.

Comparing both types of photos can help you know what to expect before you arrive.

5. Check What’s Included in the Price

The cheapest price you see initially may not be the final amount you pay.

Check whether breakfast, Wi-Fi, taxes, resort fees, cleaning fees, or other charges are included.

If you’re comparing several hotels, always compare the final total price for the entire stay.

6. Check the Room Carefully

Hotels often have several room categories at very different prices.

Check the room size, bed type, bathroom, air conditioning, windows, view, and whether the room has the facilities that matter to you.

Also make sure the room shown in the photos is actually the room category you are booking.

7. Think About Noise

Location can affect how well you sleep.

Hotels near nightlife areas, busy roads, railway stations, airports, bars, or entertainment districts may be convenient but can also be noisy.

If you’re sensitive to noise, check reviews specifically for comments about sound and consider requesting a quieter room.

8. Check the Cancellation Policy

Travel plans can change unexpectedly.

Before paying, check whether your reservation is refundable, when free cancellation ends, and how much you would lose if you cancel.

A slightly more expensive flexible booking can sometimes be worth the extra cost.

9. Check the Facilities You Actually Need

Don’t pay extra for facilities you’re unlikely to use.

Instead, focus on what matters for your trip. That might include reliable Wi-Fi, air conditioning, luggage storage, a lift, breakfast, laundry facilities, parking, or a 24-hour reception.

For a longer stay, facilities such as a refrigerator or washing machine can also be particularly useful.

10. Choose Value, Not Just the Lowest Price

The cheapest hotel isn’t automatically the best deal.

A slightly more expensive hotel in a better location could save you money on transport, reduce travel time, and make your trip much easier.

Think about the overall value rather than simply choosing the lowest nightly rate.

💡 MY TRAVEL TIP
When I compare hotels, I usually check the location on a map first and then read the most recent guest reviews. I pay particular attention to comments about cleanliness, noise, location, and anything that several travellers mention repeatedly.

A hotel can look amazing in professional photos, but the map and recent guest reviews often tell you much more about what your actual stay will be like.

QUICK HOTEL CHECKLIST

Before booking, ask yourself:

Is the location convenient for my plans?
Is public transport nearby?
Are the recent reviews good?
Does the room have everything I need?
Are there any extra fees?
Is the cancellation policy suitable?
Could noise be a problem?
Is the final price good value for the location and quality?

If you’re comfortable with the answers, you’ve probably found a hotel that works well for your trip.

THE RIGHT HOTEL CAN MAKE TRAVEL EASIER

Your accommodation is more than somewhere to sleep. It becomes your base while you explore a destination.

A well-located, comfortable hotel can mean less time commuting, easier mornings, better sleep, and more time enjoying your trip.

You don’t need the most expensive hotel — you need the one that gives you the right balance of location, comfort, price, and convenience.
