Airport Transfers
Practical ways to travel between the airport and your destination safely, easily, and without overspending.
GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO YOUR DESTINATION WITH CONFIDENCE
Arriving at a new airport can sometimes be one of the most confusing parts of a trip. You’ve collected your luggage, you may be tired after a long flight, and now you need to work out the best way to reach your accommodation.
Airport trains, buses, taxis, ride-hailing apps, and private transfers can all be good options depending on the destination, your arrival time, luggage, and budget.
A little research before you arrive can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT AIRPORT TRANSFER
1. Check Your Options Before You Fly
Before travelling, find out how the airport is connected to the city or area where you’re staying.
Most major airports offer several options, such as trains, metros, airport buses, local buses, taxis, ride-hailing apps, and private transfers.
Knowing your options before landing means you won’t have to make a rushed decision after a long flight.
2. Compare the Total Cost
The cheapest-looking option isn’t always the cheapest once everything is included.
Compare ticket prices, luggage charges, booking fees, taxi fares, and the cost of travelling from the final station or stop to your accommodation.
If several people are travelling together, a taxi or private transfer may sometimes work out reasonably when the cost is shared.
3. Check Airport Trains and Public Transport
Many airports have excellent train, metro, or public transport connections to the city centre.
These can be fast, affordable, and reliable, especially in destinations where road traffic is heavy.
Check where the service stops and how far the station is from your accommodation. A cheap airport train becomes less convenient if you still need several connections with heavy luggage.
4. Consider Airport Buses
Airport buses and coaches can be another affordable option.
They often connect airports directly with city centres, major train stations, hotels, or popular tourist areas.
They may take longer than trains because of traffic, but they can sometimes drop you closer to where you’re staying.
5. Know Where to Find Official Taxis
If you decide to take a taxi, use the official taxi rank or another authorised service recommended by the airport.
Be careful with people approaching passengers inside the terminal offering unofficial rides.
Before getting into the taxi, understand how the fare works. Depending on the destination, taxis may use a meter, have a fixed airport fare, or charge additional airport fees.
6. Check Whether Ride-Hailing Apps Operate at the Airport
Apps such as Uber, Bolt, Grab, or other local services operate at many airports, but the rules vary by destination.
Some airports have dedicated ride-hailing pickup areas that may be located away from the main arrivals exit.
Check the app after landing and make sure you go to the correct pickup point.
7. Think About Your Arrival Time
A transfer that works perfectly during the day may not be available late at night.
Trains, metros, and buses often stop operating overnight or run less frequently.
If your flight arrives very late or early in the morning, check your options beforehand. You may need a taxi, ride-hailing service, or pre-booked transfer.
8. Consider Your Luggage
Public transport is usually cheaper, but it isn’t always the easiest option when you’re carrying large suitcases.
Think about stairs, station changes, crowded trains, walking distances, and how far your accommodation is from the final stop.
Sometimes paying slightly more for a direct journey is worth it after a long flight.
9. Be Careful With Unofficial Transfer Offers
Airports are one of the places where travellers can be vulnerable to overpriced transport.
Avoid accepting rides from strangers who approach you unexpectedly in the arrivals area.
Use official airport transport, recognised taxi services, reputable transfer companies, or trusted ride-hailing apps.
10. Choose Convenience When It Makes Sense
Budget travel doesn’t mean always choosing the absolute cheapest option.
After a long overnight flight, with several bags or when arriving somewhere unfamiliar late at night, paying more for a direct transfer may make your arrival much easier.
The best option gives you the right balance of price, safety, journey time, and convenience.
💡 MY TRAVEL TIP
I usually check the airport-to-city transport before I fly and save the information on my phone.
I look at the public transport option first, but if I’m arriving very late, carrying a lot of luggage, or the accommodation is difficult to reach, I compare the price with a taxi or ride-hailing app. Sometimes spending a little more makes the first hour of the trip much easier.
BEFORE LEAVING THE AIRPORT
Before heading into the city, quickly check:
Do I know where the train, bus, or taxi pickup point is?
Is public transport still running?
Do I know roughly how much the journey should cost?
Do I need to buy a ticket before boarding?
Do I have the address of my accommodation saved?
Do I have internet access if I need a ride-hailing app?
Do I know which terminal or exit I’m leaving from?
A few minutes of preparation can make your arrival much smoother.
