The right travel apps can make all of this much easier. Here are some of the most useful apps and tools to have on your phone before your next solo trip.

1. Google Maps — Navigation & Exploring
When you’re travelling alone, having reliable navigation on your phone can make exploring a new destination much easier. Google Maps helps you find your way around, use public transport, save places, and get back to your accommodation.
Before your trip, save important locations such as your hotel, airport, train station, attractions, and restaurants. Downloading an offline map can also be useful when you don’t have mobile data.

Once you find a flight, check the airline’s own website as well and compare the final price, baggage allowance, and booking conditions before paying.
4. Booking.com, Hostelworld & Agoda — Finding Accommodation
Accommodation apps make it easy to compare hotels, hostels, guesthouses, and apartments in one place.
Booking.com and Agoda offer a wide range of accommodation, while Hostelworld is particularly useful if you’re looking for hostels and want to meet other travellers.
Don’t look at price alone. Check the location, recent reviews, facilities, cancellation conditions, and the final price including taxes and fees.
5. Uber, Bolt & Grab — Getting Around
Ride-hailing apps can make getting around unfamiliar cities much easier, especially when public transport isn’t convenient.
Which app works best depends on the destination. Uber and Bolt operate in many cities, while Grab is particularly useful in parts of Southeast Asia.
Always check which services operate legally and reliably at your destination before travelling.
6. Rome2Rio — Planning Transport Between Places
Rome2Rio is useful when you’re trying to work out how to travel between cities, airports, islands, or even countries.
It can show different transport possibilities, including trains, buses, ferries, flights, and driving routes.
I mainly use tools like this as a starting point, then check schedules and prices directly with the transport provider before booking.
7. XE Currency — Checking Exchange Rates
When you’re travelling somewhere with an unfamiliar currency, it can be difficult to know how much you’re actually spending.
A currency converter such as XE makes it easy to quickly check prices in your own currency.
This is especially useful when withdrawing cash, shopping, exchanging money, or deciding whether something is actually good value.
8. eSIM Apps — Staying Connected

You don’t need dozens of travel apps on your phone. A small selection covering the things you use most is usually enough.
For most trips, I like having apps or tools for maps and navigation, flight comparison, accommodation, local transport, translation, currency conversion, and communication ready before I leave.
I also download anything I might need offline, save important locations, and keep copies of essential booking information on my phone.
